Another Year To Repurpose & Refresh

Another Year To Repurpose & Refresh

There’s something amazing about the start of a new year. A time to reflect on the previous years’ achievements or looking forward to starting a new hobby in the coming year.

Whatever that may be, it’s generally different for each person. For me, one of my personal goals each January is to look at what’s hanging in the closet and ask myself, “do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months” or is it taking up space that can be utilized for other items.

Perhaps I’m not alone in this journey by giving my closet its yearly refresh. My love of fashion began at a very young age.

Growing up in a household of 8 children, my parents were all about repurposing clothing. Year after year the clothes, regardless of styles were handed down to the younger ones.

As they say, everything that’s old is new again and it was new to me so we wore the clothes that were given to us. Later in my teenage years, as the older siblings left home my mom started to sew new clothes.

What fun it was to purchase new bolts of fabric and see how they would become the latest and greatest style for the coming school year.

So once again I find myself standing at the closet door, getting ready to embark upon another year filled with promise while asking myself the same three questions I pose to any client:

1. Does the item fit you and is it comfortable to wear?

2. Do you see yourself wearing said item anytime in this decade? and

3. Does the item(s) hold any sentimental value that would make you want to retain it?

I’m sure many people find it hard to part with clothes, however, repurposed items given to local charities will make their way into someone else’s closet and provide that individual with a host of future memories. Wishing each and every one of you a year filled with prosperity and good health!
