And Reality Sets In

It’s September and I feel like a kid going back to school.  After all the fun and traveling over the beginning of the summer, reality and the everyday set in.

Now, it’s time to come home, but it’s really too hot to want to be home.  And yet here I am!  I hate that summer’s over but I’m really happy to jump in and start to see friends again and plan for all the upcoming events.

By the way, one of my summer travels was a cruise and I was so looking forward to it. So disappointing! The food was pretty awful.

Gone are the days when you could look forward to sitting down to a nice breakfast before starting out on your day off ship and then returning to a lovely, delicious dinner.  Nope, the food was less than average.

I really don’t understand how you can take a simple egg and make a rubbery mess of it or how breakfast rolls can be hard and tasteless even at 7:30 AM.  And the usual places you could go to when you wanted just a little in between snack were so disappointing.

The only hamburgers were ones you could buy at Guy Fieri’s.  The hot dogs made sporadic, shriveled appearances on an unwatched grill.  And the ice cream was icy, not creamy.

The only delicious food we had was in the ship’s specialty, and expensive, restaurants.  But they didn’t disappoint and for that I’m grateful.

One of the restaurants served a most delicious grilled wedge salad.  See what you think.

Grilled Wedge Salad: Make dressing of 1 cup sour cream, ½ cup mayonnaise, 3 Tbs. Buttermilk, 3 tsp. red wine vinegar, ½ tsp. Worcestershire sauce, ¼ tsp. garlic powder, ½ tsp. freshly ground pepper and ½ cup crumbled Gorgonzola cheese. Mix in small food processor. Taste for seasoning.

Cut one head of Radicchio into 8 wedges. Drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle with salt. Place in hot cast iron pan and cook on high  heat for 2-3 minutes per side. Quarter 2 small heads of Romaine lengthwise and arrange on a serving platter.

Nestle the grilled Radicchio in between. Drizzle the dressing over top and scatter with ½ cup chopped smoked almonds and ½ cup crumbled Gorgonzola cheese.
