Do Something!

Do Something!

At the beginning of every new year, my friend Freddie takes inventory on how he did last year, and then creates his list of goals for the next year. You might call this Creating New Year Resolutions but when you add in the component of looking back on the past year, suddenly you feel somewhat accountable.

Accountability? I respond to that! I want to do this!

As I think about this, I’m reminded of a Matthew West song: “Do Something!”  The song opens:  “I woke up this morning, Saw a world full of trouble. I thought ‘How’d we ever get so far down’, and ‘How’s it ever gonna turn around?’ So I turned my eyes to Heaven. ‘God, why don’t You do something?’”

Isn’t this very often the way? I look around and see how bad things need to change. Why isn’t God doing anything?

The song suggests a reply from God. “I just couldn’t bear the thought of people living in poverty, children sold into slavery. The thought disgusted me… So, I shook my fist at Heaven and said, ‘God, why don’t You do something?’ He said, ‘I did —  I created you’”

Me? I am one person! What can I do? I need to stop pushing “it” off on others. “If not us, then who? If not me and you right now, it’s time for us to do something!”

Good idea, right? I’ll start working on this — maybe next week. “If not now, then when will we see an end to all this pain? It’s not enough to do nothing. It’s time for us to do something”

Do something! Like what? What can I do that might help? It all starts in the smaller efforts. Share the Message of light and love. Uplift others.

Advocate. Smile. Comfort. Serve. Plant seeds of hope. Laugh. Feed the hungry. Fight for Justice. Teach. Volunteer. Be Kind. Champion a cause. Stop bullying. Encourage… Love Others!

What do these words mean to you? Figure it out, and let’s act on it! This year! This month! This week! Today! Right now!

Let’s get started and do something!
