Joy in the World

Joy in the World

In August I, like millions of others, watched the Olympics and picked out the competitions I was interested in. As I watched, I became hypnotized by the athletes and their joy and excitement were contagious.

The realization of their accomplishments and the spirit of sharing celebrations with athletes from competing countries was overwhelming and in contrast to how they overcame all the discourse and fighting between countries. They are so above that level and made it to the top of what leaders should take as an example of what we are meant to be.

This column is my statement and hope that we learn from this. It will appear in October just before the election.

I’ve noticed a stark difference in the way candidates campaign when they have nothing to offer but insults and lies. If they actually had to compete and be censored when they lie, they would have nothing to say.

Of course I have a preferred candidate or else the whole lie thing wouldn’t have come up. Sorry guys. Suddenly there’s a shift in who to select.

Coincidentally I wrote the heading on this before one candidate used “joy” as a campaign word.

The only time I’ve seen that emotion recently was during the Olympics. There was pure joy, comradery, sportsmanship and cultures all celebrating success and the spirit we are all meant to have.

The world gets smaller and no one cares about our leaders’ battles. Athletes have only one focus and that’s to achieve a goal to be the best they can be. If only we could learn and see what could be like if we were one people – but I know better.

So I take those wonderful moments of celebration I witnessed and carry them with me as a reminder that although it’s rare, the world does actually get along at least every 4 years. Each election we are hopeful and this year is no different.
