As we age, we start to schlep.
We stoop over, take shorter steps, start to shuffle our feet, and we move our arms less. Whether it’s due to muscle weakness, balance issues, or stiff joints, it takes more energy for seniors to walk.
But if you try to improve your walking speed, balance, and stability, you can feel 10 to 20 years younger. A little pep in your step can even help you feel sexier.
A study in Communications Biology found that brisk walkers possess significantly longer leucocyte telomeres, suggesting a younger biological age. The study also showed that increasing your walking pace is a simple, effective way to potentially improve health span and reduce the risk of age-related diseases.
Seniors who still want to strut their stuff can engage in specific exercises, including single leg stands, side leg raises, hip compass circles, side-stepping, and interval walking. Strengthening exercises, like hamstring stretches and chair stands, combined with brisk walking, can boost cardiovascular health and reduce fall risk.
Posture is also important. Look ahead, and not down at your feet. Keep your head up and shoulders back so you don’t slouch.
Supportive shoes with good arch support also help you stand taller. Swing your arms, and focus on strengthening your glutes for hip stability, quads for leg power, and calves to help push off your steps. Think “heel, roll, push” when you walk, and see how quickly you can transform your swagger.
A recent article on sixtyandme.com showcased ways to feel sexy as a senior. One suggestion was to explore “intentional movement” that helps you connect with your body.
Women can do this when they sashay their hips when they take a stroll (think Marilyn Monroe), and men’s gaits are usually powered by a sensual sway in their shoulders (think Cary Grant).
The article’s author wrote, “If you look more youthful, you will feel good about yourself. If you feel good about yourself, you’ll feel sexier. I rest my case.”
Next time you take a walk, showcase your seductive saunter and see how desirable it makes you feel, one step at a time.
