Guardianship, a Very Dangerous Law UPDATE!
Since the November issue was published we have quite a bit of news to report, let’s start with GOOD things. Assemblyman Lynn Stewart is sponsoring the bill to amend this statute (NRS 159), which is in its drafting stage now. We will keep you up dated on the progress and suggested changes as it gets closer to the opening of the 2015 legislative session.
I have received many emails from you asking what you can do to help with this fight, and you help is certainly needed. We are well over a thousand petitions now but that is nowhere near enough. You can do several things, spread the word to your friends and neighbors, have them sign the petition, but most of all, tell them this;
#1: Care-givers can no longer inherit from an estate, don’t allow yourself to be talked into signing ANYTHING.
#2: Be sure that you have a plan in place with friends and family to notify your closest relative or someone you trust if you or your husband/wife becomes ill. Document who YOU want to care for your finances while you are incapacitated.
#3: Duplicate that document and send it to several people you trust.
#4: Make sure that your trust/will and any other important documents/issues are up to date and how you want them to be.
I wish you all a joyous holiday season, make it a safe one!
