Consumers Voice – Updates and a Little Rant

The “Consumer’s Voice” column written by Rich Warren updates important Consumer information via The Vegas Voice blog.

This blog is a great addition to The Vegas Voice! It allows those of us who are columnist to communicate with our readers between monthly columns. We have the ability to provide updates, additional information and even rant (politely) a little.

My column in the July issue detail a problem Kathi and I had when we returned her Lexus at lease-end. One of the first comments I received was from Lee Butler, General Manager at Lexus of Las Vegas. He was concerned that we may not have been treated properly by his dealership. I greatly appreciated his concern and assured him that our issue was with Lexus, not his dealership. I also reiterated that the problem was resolved to our satisfaction.

The column that I received the most response to, by a very wide margin, appeared in the March 2010 issue. That column discussed how to evaluate a potential business opportunity (Business Opportunity or Scam?). While I was happy to help out our faithful readers, some of the responses left me scratching my head. (Here comes a rant) Do these people read before responding?

One respondent told me how much he enjoyed the article and that I was dead on in my comments. He then proceeded to tell me how he had an opportunity that I would absolutely love. I have no idea why he thought I was looking for an opportunity (I’m not), or would be interested in his snake oil. He went on to explain that it met all of the evaluation criteria I had outlined. Curiosity made me look and it was plain to see that it received a failing grade on seven of the ten factors I had listed, I was unable to determine the other three but it probably failed those too. I don’t understand why people fall for such garbage when there are legitimate opportunities out there. Perhaps it’s because the real businesses require you to do some work to be successful while the bad ones rely on hype and tell you how easy it is.

So I love to receive comments from readers. However, I have one favor to ask – read the article first!
